Norwalk child care education program struggles to retain staff despite state funding boost

NORWALK — Before the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the teachers and staff at The Children’s Playhouse on Bouton Street had been with the school for upwards of 20 years, owner Rovitta Paul said.

“The ideal would be to hire somebody and have them in place for years,” Paul said. “Years ago, we would hire people and they’d stay for years. I’ve had people working for me up to 20 years. They know how the program operates, they know you, the process.”

Following the school’s two-and-a-half-month shutdown in spring 2020, when schools and child care programs were scrambling for staff, Paul’s employees were slowly scooped up by other programs and the Norwalk Public Schools system.
